Buckle up cause I am about to take you on a trip to FLAVORTOWN! On this
edition of Foodie Friday I explore some local eateries in Berlin. The first
stop on this journey was a bakery that is a short walk from the apartments. I
learned about this bakery after a local in an Edeka recommended it. He told us
that they bake the best bread in the area. The name of this bakery is SoLuna
Brot und Oel. It's not a big bakery but you could tell it was a popular place
and people were frequently going in and out. Right when you walk in the smell
of fresh homemade bread hits you. Right at that moment I knew I came to the
right place. The decorations in the bakery were simple as the walls were light
and there weren't too many decorations but it looked good. Now to the part everyone
is waiting for... the bread. I set my eyes on the rosinen-zimt schnecke. It is
a roll with raisins, cinnamon and almonds on top. I also ordered a Late
Macchiato. The bread was delicious. It was moist and had a nice texture and
consistency. It was not too sweet and all of the flavors worked well together.
Not one was overpowering. The late macchiato was good. Nothing special but what
you would expect from a late macchiato. I did like how it was served in a clear
glass so you could see each layer. It gave a nice effect. Overall, this bakery
is a must visit. The prices were reasonable too.

The next institution on our
journey is an Austrian restaurant called Felix Austria that my friend Austen
Greene recommended if you are trying to get a great Schnitzel and big
proportions. So obviously I was intrigued. I ordered the veal weiner schnitzel
and the Ottakringer Wiener Original beer. This was probably best schnitzel I
have ever had before. The breading was light and crispy. The veal was cooked
perfectly. The meet was tender and not too dry. The schnitzel was served with a
side of potato salad and cucumber salad. Both salads were simple. The potato
salad had onions with it and had a slight vinegar taste. It was pretty good and
paired well with the schnitzel. The cucumber were in olive oil and with some
rosemary. It was nothing special and the cucumbers were a slightly soggy. The
beer was an Austrian beer from Vienna. It had a clear amber color with some
white foam. It is a wheat beer and gave off the aroma of toasted bread,
caramel, and some grain. For taste it was a little bland and slightly sweet. It
has a wheat flavor. The restaurant is near the market place that is a short
walk from the apartment. Overall the food was great and proportion sizes made
it well worth the money.

The final stop on our foodie journey takes us to the
Hofbrau Haus *Meek Mill voice*- “Hold
up, wait a minute y’all thought I was finished?” This was our second time going
to the Hofbrau Haus and both times were fun. The food and beer here are tasty.
The first time I had the pork knuckle which was amazing. The skin around the
knuckle is fried crispy and the knuckle has a lot of meat around it. The meat
was tender and had great flavor. This time I ordered the sausage platter which
included four pork sausages, Frankfurter sausage, and a Munich Weisswurt. On
the side was mustard, sauerkraut and mash potatoes. The pork sausages were the
best as they had the most flavor and were grilled. The other two did not have
as much flavor. The sauerkraut was interesting as it had a little sweetness. I
prefer it to not be sweet. The mustard was pretty mild and the mash potatoes
were plain and pretty standard. So if you do go I would definitely recommend
getting the pork knuckle. As for the beer I had the dunkel. It has a deep amber
brown color and has a thick creamy tan head. The aromas are pretty subtle and
light but has a sweet malty note with hints of toast and caramel. The taste is
light and crisp with slight hop bitterness. The atmosphere at the Hofbrau haus
was electric. Live music played throughout the evening and they had a small
dance floor. It was loud, lively and everyone was having a blast. Overall all
three places are reasonably priced and worth the visit. They definitely won’t
disappoint. So long fellow foodies, until next time we will meet in Flavortown.
