20th May 2018

Another sunny day in Germany today for our Maymester. Today we said good bye to Trier and all of the ancient structures that fill it. We traveled back to Cologne to only stay a brief 10 minutes before going to Essen where we had our next lesson.
After getting some much needed food and seeing the market street of Essen.
After Lunch we went to visit the Zollverein World Heritage Center. The Zollverein Heritage Center is located at the Zollverein Coal Mine and Coking Plant. The coal mine closed in 1986 and the coking plant closed in 1993. At its peak the coal mine was extracting 12000 tons of coal a day and the coke plant was the most modern and largest in Europe. Shortly after its shut down in the later 20th century it was converted to a a culture and heritage center with museums, restaurants, and artwork on display.

So with another successful day in Germany we learned about the engineering behind such a large operation and about the great culture in the area and how it is preserved in such a unique way.
